They appear to be painted on the field - even as the players walk on top of them. Is it just graphics magic?

The Technology
One of the funniest things about computer-generated video effects is the amount of effort it takes to do seemingly simple things. The most basic concepts can sometimes take a gigantic amount of effort to implement (see How Centropolis FX Creates Visual Effects and How Industrial Light %26amp; Magic Works for interesting background).
Painting a virtual first-down line on a football field is an excellent example of this process. The idea to paint a first-down line across the field on people's TV screens sounds so simple. As it turns out, implementing this is incredibly complex. It takes a tractor-trailer rig of equipment, including eight computers and at least four people, to accomplish this task!
The lines are computer generated for TV audience and cannot be seen on the ground at the field by anyone.

thanks for the article. i always imagined it worked that way, as certain medical imaging works similarly too - they will take a scan of a person then inject a marker in their blood and rescan, so then then by digital subtraction they can see your vessels in the heart. Report It
Computer "inhancement" %26lt;}:-})
Very expensive and somewhat complicated Computer Graphics. Shortest answer is that there are basically little sensors that are used across the field and turned down for where the ball needs to go when it is all said and done. Basically the game is sent by broadcast tape to a computer and instantly being sent to the TV. Yeah technology is that amazing and that fast. If you want a long drawn out explanation, I don't have it. I watched about it one time when they were talking about how they do it but basically don't remember a thing lol.
yeah, they just put it on the computer i guess...
I have always wondered that. I just got done watching the Colts win!! I don't understand football at all, I just watch the score board!! :)
Go Colts!
MIA-We have a winner-CGI-Computer Generated Images, and the winner is ---- YOU!!! Tell Her what shes won!
She has won the ability to ask and or answer any question on ANSWERS! Not only that, but you can choose who to,or not to talk with. Much love from myself(and some kidding).
Yes... "graphics magic." The players and fans cannot see the line if that is what you are asking.
they have a compueter where they draw lines with mouse or touch screen
The lines are computer generated.
all it is is graphics from a computer animation just like movies they make characters its very easy to do
pure graphics...the magic of electronics......good luck
lol... it's graphics, it isn't actually on the field... its done by the tv show..
